Puzzle 405 (Creek) [Treasure hunt]

June 13, 2012

This is a Creek puzzle, with a twist. One of the grid squares has treasure in it, though its location is not given. A number in a grid cell gives the length of the shortest path to the treasure going through adjacent unshaded cells. The path length is computed as the number of grid cells used, including the two cells with the clue and the treasure. Cells with a number or treasure are unshaded.

The harder companion to 332 posted last week. Still a bit light for this blog, as anyone who recalls the last time I posted a Creek on Wednesday will agree.

I constructed five puzzles for the 2011 Indian Puzzle Championship that ran the Sunday before last on June 12. All of them but one ended up coming out well enough that I’d like to post them on here too. The last one was a Numberlink / ABC Connect that was too easy and simple to go on here, although it was evidently appropriate for the contest.

Since Creek doesn’t appear much in competitions if ever, this one was included in a round of innovative types, where each type had an easy puzzle and a slightly harder puzzle. This puzzle here is the easy one and was made to be solved by someone new to the type.

I visited this idea just last week, although I think it is more appealing when used in this type.

Puzzle 132 (Creek) [All Twos]

December 17, 2009

This is a Thursday Creek puzzle, with a twist. All twos in the interior of the puzzle are given to you. That means that any vertex touching four squares with exactly two of those shaded is clued with a 2. (there may be unclued vertices on the edge both of whose squares are shaded)
