Puzzle Pack Vol. IV: Fillomino-fillia 2

November 13, 2012

At long last, the fourth puzzle pack, albeit several months later than I wanted. As this is a companion to the Fillomino-fillia 2 test and serves as its solution booklet, this pack is coauthored with mathgrant, who actually wrote more of the puzzles than I did.

If you did all of the Fillomino-fillia 2 puzzles on the test and preview series, don’t pass over this. You have only done 26 Fillominos in all. This pack has 56 total puzzles, so you’re not even half done.

Download the pack (PDF; 1863 KB)

This pack contains

  • The rules and a walkthrough for an example for Fillomino
  • 9 puzzles using the standard rules, including a large 20 by 36 brought to you by mathgrant
  • 10 puzzles representing all variations from Fillomino-fillia 1
  • 4 puzzles of each of the six variations from Fillomino-fillia 2: one easier 7 by 7, the two test puzzles, and the preview
  • 4 additional Fillomino-fillia 2 rejects: a Liar, a Snake, and two No-rectangles
  • 4 puzzles representing 3 new variations, which may appear on a tentative test for next year that might be called Fillomino-fillia 3
  • 4 chimera puzzles combining other variations in the pack
  • A fifth chimera puzzle: the FF2 version of last year’s Potpourri
  • Hints and solutions for all puzzles

Reporting of errors can be done by comments here or by email.

There will probably not even be progress on Volume V until 2013, as there are Mystery Hunt things to be done.

Puzzle Pack Vol. III: Hidato

May 27, 2012

My original intention was to release this quick, short pack near the beginning of May as catch up. Well, it’s not the beginning of May, and the pack is still relatively quick and short, so now I really feel like I’m short-changing you guys. I suppose as important as puzzle construction is as a hobby to me, I can’t go turning down really big opportunities in life for its sake alone.

This pack contains

  • The rules, a walkthrough for an example, and a few strategies for Hidato
  • 10 puzzles using the standard rules, half 5 by 5 and half 8 by 8
  • 4 Cipher Hidato puzzles, half 5 by 5 and half 8 by 8
  • 4 Straight Hidato puzzles, half 5 by 5 and half 8 by 8
  • 4 Diagramless Hidato puzzles, half 5 by 5 and half 8 by 8
  • 4 Wide Hidato puzzles, half 5 by 5 and half 8 by 8
  • 4 Sum Hidato puzzles, half 5 by 5 and half 8 by 8
  • Hints and solutions for all puzzles

Version 2 uploaded on 5/27/2012 6:50 PM EDT: Fixed some typos and rewrote III.8 (which got reordered to become III.7) to fix an extremely severe error.

Version 3 uploaded on 5/28/2012 7:20 AM EDT: Fixes errors in III.13 and III.15 along with a few other typos. I rechecked every puzzle just before uploading this, so I hope these are the last of the major mistakes.

“Hidato?” you might say. “HIDATO?!” Yes, Hidato. Suffice it to say, these might be the first and last Hidato puzzles I ever make; I’m not sure how much more I could do with the type after these. But what good ideas I had I made the most of, so hopefully you will be able to find enjoyment in those. Like with the Slitherlink pack, the variations will probably be more interesting than the classic ones.

As usual, reporting of errors you find either in a comment here or by email would be much appreciated.

I’ll do my best to have the next pack out in less than two months. It actually already has some significant progress behind it… more on that later. I won’t make a guarantee though; you know how those usually end up.

Puzzle Pack Vol. II: Statue Park

March 13, 2012

Alright, finally got this one done. Apologies for a second delay since I promised a March 10th release in an earlier post. That said, it may have worked out in your favor since I spent the 11th flying to the east coast for spring break and made almost a dozen more puzzles during that trip. Now this pack is about double the size of what it was originally planned to be. Incidentally, the donation I mentioned a couple weeks ago requested Statue Park; that right there was the first time I decided to increase the size beyond my original intentions.

Download the pack (PDF; 657 KB)

This pack contains

  • The rules, a walkthrough for an example, and a long list of strategies for Statue Park
  • 8 puzzles using a Tetromino bank, all 7 by 7
  • 8 puzzles using a Double Tetromino bank, all 10 by 10
  • 4 puzzles using a “Battlesquares” bank, all 10 by 10
  • 8 puzzles using a subset of the Pentomino bank, all 10 by 10
  • 8 puzzles using the full Pentomino bank, all 12 by 12
  • 4 puzzles using wackier, unique banks
  • A large puzzle using a full Hexomino bank (35 shapes)
  • 4 puzzles in a “Contributed” section, with one by detuned, one by Serkan Yurekli, and two by mathgrant
  • Hints and solutions for all puzzles (with the exception of no hints for the contributed puzzles)

That’s 45 total puzzles. Bit more than that 20-25 minimum I said I’d guarantee each pack. No variations, and no labelled clues even, but I don’t think I needed to do any of those.

Version 2 uploaded on March 15, 2012 10:48 AM EDT. Fixes some minor typos and a uniqueness error at the very end of II.41. Thanks to Aaron and Nils Miehe for notifying me of these issues.

Like with the first pack, I tried my best to find and fix errors of any kind, but it wouldn’t surprise me if some slipped through again. Please let me know of any glitches you find, either through a comment here or an email to palmermebane -at- gmail -dot- com. Updates will be announced in this post.

Puzzle Pack Vol. I: Slitherlink

January 1, 2012

Happy 2012 from the Eastern US timezone. Expect Puzzle 382 to be posted on the 4th.

Download the pack (PDF; 1.27 MB)

This pack contains

  • A Slitherlink primer for novice solvers
  • 15 classic Slitherlinks, mostly on the easier side
  • 5 variations with 3 puzzles each: All Threes, Interior Path, Domino, Relation, Liar
  • 3 chimeras each combining two of the above variations
  • 2 larger puzzles
  • Hints and solutions for each puzzle

Version 2 uploaded on 1/3/2012 10:12 AM ET. Fixed multiple solution errors in I.12 and I.23.

Version 3 uploaded on 1/8/2012 12:28 AM ET. Fixed a major uniqueness error in I.35.

There is a nontrivial possibility of a broken puzzle somewhere. If you think you’ve found one, you may either comment here or email me at palmermebane -at- gmail -dot- com. Any updates to the pack will be announced in this post, so be sure to check here first before reporting an error.

Announcing Puzzle Pack Series

December 30, 2011

First, the numbered puzzles posted on this blog will now become weekly posts, with a puzzle of whatever type or difficulty going up every Wednesday.

In place of my usual 3-4 per week schedule, I plan to release a pack of puzzles as a PDF every couple months or so. The packs will have 20-25 puzzles minimum spanning a full range of difficulties. Each one will have puzzles all of the same basic type or be themed in some other fashion.
