Great puzzle, thank you! In the end, I had more trouble with the rather “elementary” logic involved in the second part of the puzzle than with the break-in.

Is the logic at the very top the same/ very similar to that of the bottom?

Only in a superficial way. It’s the same concept taken in different directions.

By the way, was it important that the numbers 1-10 all appear in black squares? It’s a bit of a shame you have two 8′s.

That was not intentional in the slightest and I only noticed it when I read your comment. It’s kind of funny I made the 2 and the 6 point the way they did for it to work out, since they could have gone the other way.
In fact I actually aimed for the two 8s to end up the same number as a small touch, since they felt like the most important clues post break-in.
